Point 510

Point 510

The Point 510 from Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. (FPSI) is a low-cost Windows® 95-compatible pen tablet computer with a 10.4" SVGA DSTN display. This display, along with a 100 MHz processor and integrated communications features, makes the Point 510 ideal for decision support across a wide range of applications that demand SVGA, while its cost — significantly lower than comparable products — appeals to value-sensitive customers. As with all of Fujitsu's Windows-compatible pen tablets, the Point 510 fits seamlessly into large organizations using IT to streamline business processes, such as healthcare providers looking to implement electronic medical records, quantify treatment outcomes, reduce costs, increase revenues and improve the quality of patient care.

Designed specifically to meet the computing needs of a workforce that requires both a high-density information display and complete mobility, the Point 510 pen tablet is a superior solution in settings where previously only a laptop was possible. The following provides a description of the Point 510's unique product features and their associated benefits.

Design Feature Benefits

Pen Tablet Form-Factor The Point 510's handheld form-factor and light weight make it ideal for "on-the-spot" decision support applications. It delivers the same type of computing power and flexibility as a laptop, but in a form-factor suitable for use while walking or standing. The Point 510 offers greater power, flexibility and standards support than any type of PDA, enabling it to fit seamlessly into enterprise infrastructures.

Case Design The Point 510's case is designed to be hand-held by either right-handed or left-handed users. The edges of the case are rounded, and there are textured grip areas on each side to make it easier to hold the system. When individual cables (such as keyboard and DC input power) are attached to the Point 510, they are easy to manage because all the ports are on one end of the system. All the doors on the Point 510 are thoughtfully designed — for example, the spring-loaded PC Card shutter doors can be left open (for frequent access to a modem card), or closed (when access is expected to be infrequent), at the user's choice.

Size and Weight The Point 510 is designed with hand-held use in mind. The size and weight of the unit are optimized to put maximum capacity in the smallest and lightest package possible. The dimensions of the unit are 11.7 x 8.7 x 1.4 inches (296 x 222 x 36 mm). The unit weighs approximately 3.8 lbs. (1.7 Kg) without the integrated wireless LAN option.

Hot Pads and Status Display Pen-sensitive hot pads on the Point 510 enable the user to adjust common settings with a touch of the pen. The use of hot pads eliminates any mechanical controls on the unit, resulting in increased reliability. The Point 510's hot pads include display contrast and brightness, speaker on/off and volume, monitor settings, and right mouse button. A convenient LED status display indicates power status, disk activity, low battery and charging status.

Integrated Audio The Point 510 enables audio applications with either its built-in microphone and speaker, or an external microphone and headphones. The benefit of integrated audio is the user's ability to record and play back voice annotations (for example, in a patient's chart). All audio circuitry is fully compatible with Sound Blaster Pro standards.

Resistive Digitizer The Point 510 features a pressure-sensitive resistive digitizer which allows temporary use with a fingernail or other pointing object if the pen is misplaced or lost.

Display Capabilities Benefits

Large SVGA Color Display The Point 510's large 10.4" DSTN color display delivers crisp SVGA resolution (800 x 600) and 256 colors, allowing it to be used in applications that require high information density and complete compatibility with desktop systems. This means the same information-rich applications that run on enterprise desktops and laptops can now run on a pen tablet. This display capability is expected to be particularly attractive in such industries as healthcare, where high-density information displays are critical.

External Monitor Support The Point 510 supports use of an external monitor at resolutions up to 1024 x 768 (XVGA), enabling easy desktop integration.

Battery and Power Management Benefits

Lithium Ion Battery An advanced lithium-ion battery enables the Point 510 to offer up to 5 hours of continuous use (application dependent) and up to 15 days of suspended operation. One of the key benefits of lithium-ion is the lack of any memory effect — the user never has to worry about fully discharging the battery before recharging.

Advanced Power Management The Point 510 employs a multi-level approach to power management. The key building blocks include the processor power management capability provided by Opti's chipset, the complete implementation of APM 1.2 in the Point 510's BIOS, the easy-to-use Windows utility which allows the user to control the power management features, and the variety of libraries provided to VARs and systems integrators which allow custom applications to control the power management features. The result is a customizable system that offers both solid performance and long battery life.

Internal Bridge Battery An integrated, internal bridge battery allows warm-swapping of the main battery without rebooting the system or losing data in memory.

CPU, Memory and Storage Benefits

100 MHz 5x86 CPU The Point 510's 100 MHz 5x86 processor offers robust performance at low cost.

On-Chip Cache The Point 510 includes 16 KB of on-chip cache to speed performance; this is twice the amount of cache in the previous generation of 486 processors.

Expandable Memory The Point 510 features 8 MB of high-performance EDO RAM memory. Maximum memory capacity is an impressive 56 MB through two DIMM slots, allowing the Point 510 to meet the demands of Windows 98 and easily handle memory-hungry applications, such as voice recognition.

Gigabyte Capacity Hard Disk The Point 510 uses an internal 2.5" hard disk with a 1.6 GB capacity. This large storage capacity makes it possible for the Point 510 to keep pace with the growing size of enterprise applications, such as remote database software. An optional 2.1 GB hard drive is available to meet even more demanding requirements.

Shock-Mounted Hard Disk The hard disk in the Point 510 is shock-mounted, using Fujitsu-developed technology. The shock mounts extend the shock and vibration resistance of the 2.5" hard disk well beyond that of a PCMCIA hard disk. Since the hard disk is the most sensitive component in the entire system, this significantly increases the overall ruggedness and reliability of the Point 510.

Connectivity Benefits

Integrated Wireless LAN Option The Point 510's fully integrated Proxim RangeLAN2™ wireless LAN option puts the power of enterprise-wide resources in the worker's palm — at a lower cost and higher reliability than Type-II PC Card wireless LAN solutions.

Radio-Ready™ The Point 510 has been designed to provide an optimum environment for the use of PC Card WAN radios. This "Radio-Ready" capability both ensures that the customer's chosen radio will not interfere with the operation of the computer in any way, and that the computer will not interfere with the radio (thus increasing radio range by allowing reception of weaker signals).

High-Usage Docking The Point 510 offers a specially designed high-usage docking capability that allows the pen tablet to be inserted and removed from a dock up to 100,000 times. This capability allows battery-charging and peripheral-access cradles to be strategically placed throughout a work site, providing users with ready access to a fully charged tablet and/or a keyboard and mouse. The industrial-strength contacts and docks have been designed to withstand vigorous use by multiple shifts of workers over many years.

Simple Expansion The Point 510 features one Type-II/Type-III PC Card slot for the easy addition of modems, radios, peripherals, etc.

IrDA Port The Point 510's integrated IrDA port enables point-and-shoot printing and connectivity with other IrDA devices at 115 Kbps.

Broad Connectivity The Point 510 features a wide range of standard connectivity methods, which significantly increases the flexibility and applicability of the system. The connectivity includes PCMCIA, IrDA, an RS-232 serial port, an Rx/Tx second serial port, a keyboard port, a mouse port, a monitor port, a parallel port, a floppy port, audio input/output ports and a replicator port.

Port Replicator The Point 510's port replicator allows a wide variety of desktop peripherals to be connected to the unit in seconds. Similar in concept to a docking station, the port replicator on the Point 510 enables single-motion, snap-on connectivity for all of the ports listed above except audio.

System Software Benefits

Operating Systems The Point 510 provides three different Windows operating systems that will satisfy most requirements: Windows 98, Windows 95, and MS-DOS 6.2 with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. The latter operating system is provided because many of the more conservative corporations in North America and Europe are cautious in upgrading to Windows 95 or Windows 98, preferring (in some cases) to wait for Windows NT.

Handwriting Recognizer The Point 510 includes both the Microsoft Alphanumeric Recognition System (MARS) and the Handwriter® Recognition System (HRS) from Communication Intelligence Corporation. Either recognizer can also easily be replaced with any of a variety of other handwriting recognizers —including cursive (script) recognizers — available from other companies. This provides the VAR or systems integrator with a high degree of flexibility in configuring custom applications.

Customization and Options Benefits

Product Customization The Point 510 delivers the following utilities as part of its standard toolbox for VAR, systems integrator or MIS customization. These utilities bring increased applicability to the Point 510.
  • Boot-time utility for setting all BIOS options, with the capability of being hidden from the end-user once the settings are made
  • IrDA file transfer and printer redirector utility
  • Windows application for setting BIOS power management features without rebooting
  • MS-DOS application for setting most BIOS options
  • Windows DLL for setting BIOS options (including power management), which allows custom applications to directly change the system configuration
  • C Libraries for setting BIOS options
  • Utility for creating and loading custom BIOS configurations in VAR staging operations

Wide Range of Accessories The Point 510 offers a broad selection of options and accessories. These add-ons significantly increase the flexibility of the Point 510, allowing it to meet a wider range of application requirements.

Options and accessories include: 8 MB/16 MB/32 MB DRAM cards, four cradles (charge-only, high-usage, high-connectivity and wall-mount) auto adapter for power from the cigarette lighter, external battery charger, external floppy disk drive, bar code wand with integrated stylus holder, nylon slipcase, combination case for tablet with keyboard, harsh environment case, port expander, port replicator, low-power keyboard, adjustable folding desk stand, hand strap, pen tether, screen protector, and spare pens, batteries and AC adapters.

Warranties The Point 510, as with all Fujitsu pen tablets, comes with a 3-year limited warranty. The display also comes with an optional, display damage service plan that provides up to two screen replacements per year, regardless of the cause of failure. These warranties significantly reduce the total cost of ownership.
